Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, Sept. 7-13, promotes vital connection to communications services
(Des Moines) – For many Iowans who can’t afford telephone or internet service, staying connected to emergency personnel, family and friends might be out of reach. Having access to these services also can be the difference between social connection and complete isolation.
During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, September 7-13, the Iowa Utilities Commission joins with the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in promoting the Lifeline program. Lifeline helps low-income consumers connect to the nation’s communications networks, find jobs, access health care services, reach out to loved ones, and call for help in an emergency.
Through Lifeline, eligible consumers can receive monthly bill discounts of up to $9.25 for broadband or bundled phone and broadband service, or $5.25 for voice-only service. The program is available to low-income residents who participate in certain public assistance programs or qualify based on income.
Contact your local telecommunications provider for details, or find information on program eligibility, rules, and instructions on how to apply online at lifelinesupport.org.
The IUC Lifeline webpage also has helpful resources, including instructions on applying by mail, a list of Iowa companies providing Lifeline services, and a link to an American Sign Language video about how Lifeline works.
Individuals with disabilities who may need assistance with their Lifeline application should contact the Lifeline Support Center at lifelinesupport.org or (800) 234-9473.
